Birthday Week!!! 20 years old!

Well I'm 20 now. So that's pretty cool.

But enough about that.

Everything here in Libmanan is going really great! Last week a big river flooded about 15-20 feet so that was fun. We had a really good attendance the yesterday at church, and 9, yes 9, investigators came to church. Some of those are now pretty much qualified for baptism! Along with that, we had 15 less active members come, some of them for the first time in a loooong time. This was accompanied by some great lessons about the Restoration, and many other things. 

One thing we also taught a lot this week was the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Really helped me to learn that it's not just some check list (faith, repentance, baptism, gift of the Holy Ghost, endure to the end), but a process of becoming something. All of these things, as grand and beautiful as they are, mean absolutely nothing without any application in our lives. So the question is: who am I now? Who do I want to be? And what am I going to do to become that? Of course the obvious answer is I want to be like Jesus. But also an important step is to recognize the special talents and gifts we've been given, and what we want to make of those. How do we apply the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the blessings we've been given (along with the trials) in our lives? Never forget what He did for you, and always remember what you can do for Him. For me, just going through the motions doesn't make you any more of a Christian than simply putting on scrubs makes you a doctor or putting on a nametag makes you a missionary. It's all about effort, and becoming something, and becoming something for the right reason.

New Area, Libmanan!

Well I got transferred! I'm in an area called Libmanan, just a little north of where I was before. It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but is a pretty nice place and we even have a 7-11. The branch here is also pretty strong, but still having some struggles with less actives. There are about 500 members here, and only about 100 were at church yesterday, so we have a lot of work to do, especially in reactivating priesthood bearers. So far, we've had some pretty great work, and have some progressing investigators and several new investigators that have some potential. My new companion is Filipino, Elder Mercado. My two other housemates are also Filipino, so I guess my Tagalog might start to improve again. There's also two sisters here, one from Virginia, and one who just arrived from Peru, and they are both great. Sorry, I don't have a whole lot more, I'm still getting used to the area! My Surgery in the Philippines

No I didn't actually have surgery here. I just wanted Mom to have a small heart attack when she read the subject line haha.

Good last week for me here in San Fernando. On Saturday I found out that I would be transferred to a new area, which I will be going to tomorrow. Still don't know where I'll be goin or who I'll be with but that's part of the fun right?

Our week wasn't super eventful, but we were able to visit a lot of the members and work with a few of our investigators which is nice. Problem is, one of them left for Manila early in the week because her daughter there is sick, so...I guess we'll teach her when she's back haha. But we are still working with her family that is still here. We also finally figured things out with one investigator, Louie. He's been on the fence for a bit about moving to another town for college, so we weren't really sure what to do with him. But he finally decided to stay in our area for a few months at least. He's golden, already completely believes in everything and has a great testimony and desire to know more and completely follow what we teach him. He already looks forward to an eternal marriage (I think he's 19). He has some funny questions about the church though, just because he's still really unfamiliar with a lot of things. "Do we believe in Christmas in this church?" I just like the way he says it, because it's not "your church" but "our church".

Anyway, like I said I'll be leavin tomorrow, off to a different place! One thing that was interesting was talking with some of the missionaries that will be going home tomorrow. I realized how much I'll miss some of them, and that that will be me in just 9 and a half months. So I guess I better work even harder; there's not much time left! Love you all, have a great week!

A Sense of Sacred

Helllllooooo again.

The past week was great, got to spend some good time on service and building houses. Then we had a great Zone Conference where we talked about obedience and about the talk "A Sense of the Sacred". It's a really great talk, if any of you want to try reading it. It talks all about how we can gain an appreciation and reverence for sacred things, and the importance of that in our lives. It was really great to hear from President and Sister Reeder as well! We also had a decent turnout yesterday for church, with 7 of our Less Active members coming to church. We've found out that they don't really need a big long lesson once a week, but constant, short visits just for us to show them that we really care for them. We did have several great spiritual lessons that did end up with bringing members back to church. Our less active second counselor opened up to us and told us he thinks he's ready to begin the repentance process to come back to church and lead his family again. So hopefully we can get moving on that with the help of our Branch President! Besides that, not really an eventful week. Near nighttime on the way to an appointment, we walked passed a "Hot Babes Bar" where there were some women outside who were yelling at us to join them, for free because we're foreigners, but we thanked them for the offer and said we're ok and kept goin haha. Kind of a random experience. I thought of the great and spacious building, but this one wasn't very tempting haha. Random lesson to not get distracted from the Lord's work. Strengthening the Branch in San Fernando

Hey everyone!

Short on time this week. We spent the morning building a house for a member, so we had to cut our time down on everything in our schedule.

We had another pretty good week. We felt like a lot of our less actives have been making some great progress, so we decided to try out some more finding. We got a lot of Filipinos hiding and running away, but we tried not to get too discouraged. We ended up talking to several people who were really nice and seemed like they could really benefit from the Gospel, so now we are just working on following up with them. Things are pretty much all settled down here in our area, so I don't have a whole lot to talk about. Just keep working away here in San Fernando. It's been a pretty rough area, but we have seen a lot of progress, not in terms of investigators, but mostly just in strengthening the branch. We still get a little opposition at times, but I feel like everything we've done has been for the best, so we just trust in God and keep movin on and doing what we were sent here to do. The Benefits of Service

Hey everyone! This week wasn't too bad. We kept ourselves pretty busy with service and stuff. Last Wednesday, a lot of the priesthood got together (even a few less active members) and took a hike up into the mountains to cut down some bamboo and other wood to rebuild the house that I mentioned last week. It took most of our day up, but ended up being a great chance for everyone to fellowship each other and provide service for a family that really needed it. It turned out to be super successful, because the family that we cut all the wood for came to church on Sunday! I haven't seen some of them at church since I've gotten to the area, so that's great news for them. We also did some more service on Saturday for another family whose house got trashed by the typhoon. They were all super grateful, and we had a good time doing it. After the service we got to attend a baptism for some investigators I interviewed a couple weeks ago, and they were both super happy. I was really excited for them. We finally have power again also in most of our area, so we are pretty much back to the regular schedule now, no more curfew. It's great because that was a huge limitation. Most fathers weren't getting home until around our curfew time, and we can't go into houses without any males, so we should start to pick up work again soon. This next week should be a little bit better, and I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks and I hope you're all doin great!

Priesthood

Hey Everyone!

So we had another pretty good week. We spent a lot of it running around coordinating branch efforts to rebuild a house for a member family whose home was destroyed during the typhoon. It took a lot of time, and the week started off kinda rough, but finally we got it all worked out. The priesthood was able to come together yesterday and finalize plans for getting all of the materials, which will be donated by a member, from the mountains, then bringing them back down to where the house is and spending the day repairing everything we can. I'm so happy the branch is finally taking the lead on this, and I'm so proud of the progress they have made. This family has been struggling since the typhoon, so it's been great to see things finally working out for them. All of the priesthood will be participating and a lot of the Relief Society too. We also got together the auxiliary presidents for a Family Home Evening last Saturday for a less active family. It was a really great time, and the family was asked to bear their testimonies at the end, and they talked about how they love the church, and know they need to come back to activity. And they did show up for church on Sunday! We had one of the highest attendances we've had since I've been in the area and 8 less active members came from our area. It's been such a struggle, but Sunday felt like such a successful day and I think we finally got our branch out of the tough place it was in and moving forward. The leaders of the church are now really working together and are leading efforts to fellowship and reach out to less actives. I think we are laying a great foundation for the next missionaries to come through here.

Besides that, our work was mostly just visiting other less active members. We are still having a tough time with a couple of them, but I feel like there is still some little progress. Now we are ready to start shifting back towards investigator work. Hope you're all still doin great, and I love you all!
